ModLBoxes are Made for Those Who Love to Build

I worked with Chris to build a sturdy display box for my new Mandalorian razor crest ship (for my space station hangar). Amazing quality!!

I had a custom 24 x12" box made with two levels for my Warhammer figures. It looks awesome with the lights and the custom printed background. I will be getting another one for my WH tanks.

My son needed a good way to display his Xwings as he seems to love this Lego model. We purchased two of the 24" cases and used them to make side by side dioramas. Well worth the money as they look like crafted pieces of furniture in the room....and that fact that they rotate is really cool.

ModLBox: do You need a Long Box or a Square Box?

The Best way to Protect and Display Your Models. Look at the details below for answers.

The Best Way to Keep Dust off Your Legos and Models

The best way to keep dust off your Lego models is to put them in a display box or behind glass. If you are lucky to have the money and the space, you can buy a custom book shelf with glass doors. Or if quality does not matter, then you can get a budget, pressboard and cardboard case from Wayfair for about $250. The sides won't fit together straight, and it may be usable for only a year or so...until it starts to come apart). Don't try to move it or you will have some major disappointment. The other option is to purchase a solid wood case with glass doors. These will start at about $1,800 for a 3ft tall case (and you will have to arrange shipping). The prices only go up from there.

Put Your Models in a Display Case to Keep the Dust Off

The other way to protect your Lego models and plastic models from dust is to use a display case. You can get any number of cheap, acrylic cases from China which are sold on Amazon or eBay. These are fine if you are looking for a cheap, plastic box to put on your shelf. They work, but they are often the thinnest plexiglass and of the lowest quality—but they do keep the dust off. Why invest the time to build your expensive models only to put them in a cheap disposable plastic box that detracts from the model.

What is a ModLBox

The ModLBox is the best way to keep dust off your models. It is a solid wood display case that is custom built for your models and collections. I created the first one a few years ago to keep dust and grime off my models. It worked so well that we decided to sell them to fellow builders. ModLBox is our trademarked name for this amazing display case. MOC means "My Own Creation" and is a common term among AFOL and Model builders. ModLBox is seemed to be a great term to describe how our display cases work for your creations. It is like we say here on the site: "Our parts and your imagination."

What can I use it for?

We initially designed the ModLBox for our Military Brick Sets. I wanted a nice and useful way to display some of the models that I built. The case will work great for your traditional models, model trains, Lego kits and many types of table top games featuring minifigures and scenery (such as Warhammer and Bolt Action games). The cases can be modified by you to fit your scene and model.

What is it made of?

We like REAL wood...and always have. Our cases are made from solid wood and some furniture grade plywood. There is not any MDF (the stuff most cheap furniture is made from—sawdust and cardboard). The new, common name for the stuff is "engineered wood." It is engineered because they took sawdust and added some glue to it.

Do you make custom sizes?

We know one size does not fit all, so we offer custom sizes in addition to the standard boxes already listed. We do make our display cases to custom order so email us what you're wanting to do. Small adjustents probably won't change the price very much. However, some of the larger boxes do require more plexiglass which equals getting it custom cut for your big box...so it will add a bit to the cost. Also the shipping cost will increase with the larger measurements.

What is the largest size you offer?

We can make the box to fit most needed sizes. Normally we do not like to build boxes over 36" long/high due to the cost of the plexiglass. We cut most of it in our shop, but really large pieces are harder to cut safely on our saws (so we have to outsource the material and cuts (so increased pricing). And the oversize transit gets expensive for those larger boxes. That said, if you have a need for for a really large box just email... and we can give you a price and see if your project is feasible.

What modifications can I make to my ModLBox?

All of our ModLboxes can have a pre-drilled hole so that you can add your choice of lights to your box. They can be simple battery pack LEDs, or you can add various electric lights to the box. You can also add a "Lazy Susan" styled rotation ring to the bottom of your box. We sell the kits and will gladly attach your upgrade before shipping your order.

Do you offer free shipping on a ModLBox display case.

No, we cannot offer the free shipping as we get charged a LOT of $$ by UPS and FedEx...aka Pirates. The shipping companies just charge $$$ these days. Every year they increase the shipping costs by 5-7% without fail. We could offer "free shipping," but the reality is that we would have to roll it into the cost of the product. If we ship a 24x24x12 tall box from SC to Portland OR, our discounted cost is $48 by UPS. If we ship a 24x12x10 tall case to Portland OR, our cost is $28. And these prices are with our discounts!!! So we do have to charge you for the shipping cost. :-(

How do I change or add a printed background to my ModLBox?

We do offer most of our boxes with a background image and a foreground image. We custom design and custom print them in our shop, and we offer various themes such a military, castle, fantasy and the like. We also can create custom art as the images are meant to be changed by the user as needed. Just let us know if you are looking for a custom scene, and we would be glad to help.

Where can I buy a ModLBox?

We build and sell our boxes local in S.C., and through this web store and on eBay. When you buy from us, you will get a high quality item that you will use for many years.

Why do your boxes cost so much?

Everything seems to have gone up in price recently. The same applies to our business as well. Our wood costs have more than doubled since the pandemic...the prices never came back down. We operate a small print shop and wood shop where we make all our products, and we have the associated costs like workers' comp, insurance, rent and equipment costs. One of our seven large-format printers cost over $11K (and it costs a lot to feed them ink and paper). We also pay our shop help a good, living wage. It all adds up—and we have to sell our products at a price we can afford to stay in business. We could sell you a cheaply built MDF and plastic "China case," but we want to offer you a better option. Our ModLBox is built in the USA with real wood by people who care about your display. They are not mass produced in a foreign factory and drop shipped to Amazon like most items these days. Our display case will protect your cool builds for a very long time, and we are an email away to help. Thanks for looking! Chris

Does the ModLBox come painted or stained?

Listed box prices are for wood that is unstained/unpainted. Many of our customers are very detailed and skilled creators who want the flexibility to design the box their way. Other creators prefer to have the box painted or stained from the start. Painting or staining adds about $20 or so to the ModLBox price due to labor and materials (it takes 2-3 coats of color on the wood to make it look great...so it does add a bit of time to the process). You can let us know at check out if you have any custom color needs for your box.

Is it MocBox or ModLBox?

We designed the display case and named it MocBox, but it seems that there is another product with that name...a British picnic basket. So the registered name is now ModLBox.....but you can still take it on a picnic if you want to build something in the outdoors.
